Cabo San Lucas Mission

The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is only a foundation, a few cinderblocks and iron re-bar, but it has already begun to host Sunday Mass! The community raises money for construction materials through food sales and other activities, and donates the necessary labor

In the fall of 2003, the friars of the Western United States began working in partnership with the friars of Baja California and Northern Mexico to establish a parish community among migrant workers in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The parish community currently consists of six chapels in various neighborhoods on the outskirts of Cabo San Lucas.

The friars from the Western US are student friars who are given the opportunity to experience life in a “third world” country. In these migrant communities the student friars learn the story of material poverty by voluntarily living it.

Bringing food and blankets to a newly arrived family, helping a gifted artisan find a better outlet for her wares, seeking providers of needed health services for a child: these are only a few ways in which the friars share in the daily challenges of the poor.

Along with the many challenges they face, there is also an abundance of joy. Friars participate in the lively faith of these communities: in bible studies, celebrations of saints and holy days, family prayer and friendship, etc.

The student friars are led by Brother Ed Dunn, OFM, a gifted community builder, and two energetic friars from Northern Mexico. With the guidance and help of these friars and the members of the migrant communities, the students are given the real life experience of being materially poor, something that they will take with them into their future ministries.
